UPDATE: Audition date added on Wednesday, November 12, at 6:00 p.m. Call, email, or just show up to audition! Auditions and rehearsals will be held in New Britain at NBYT at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA.

Just in time for auditions this week, New Britain Youth Theater announces a performance venue and dates for its first Teen Company musical, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. NBYT has become a regional youth theater in the past five years—drawing participants from throughout Central Connecticut and from over fifty towns throughout the state—and Tom Sawyer will be its first performances outside of New Britain.

The venue for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer will very appropriately be The Carriage House Theater in Hartford, directly across the street from The Mark Twain House & Museum. A promotional event with the Twain House is also being planned. Performance dates will be February 20, 21 and 22, 2015. Rehearsals will be held in New Britain at NBYT’s home at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA.

The Carriage House Theater was the former home of Hartford Children’s Theatre, and the space was recently taken over by HartBeat Ensemble. In addition to its own events, HartBeat Ensemble regularly rents the space to other companies.

About the Musical

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a musical version of the classic Mark Twain novel set in Missouri in the 1840’s. The seeds for the musical were planted at a Nashville songwriters’ retreat held to draw some country artists to write for Broadway. Don Schlitz, a Grammy-winning songwriter who has written country hits for everyone from Kenny Rogers to Randy Travis and Mary-Chapin Carpenter, had been invited to attend. A director connected him with book writer Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo, Crazy for You) to start working on the show.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer premiered at the Shubert Theater in New Haven on February 28, 2001. The cast featured Joshua Bell as the title character, in addition to performances from Kristen Bell, Tom Aldredge, Jane Connell, and John Dossett. The production moved to Broadway, opening at the Minskoff Theater on April 26, 2001. In a Broadway season dominated by The Producers however, the musical was short-lived, and it closed on May 13 after 21 performances and 34 previews. It has gotten new life in regional and community theaters. The Broadway production was nominated for two Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, and two Outer Critics Circle Awards. It was also nominated for a Drama League Award for Distinguished Production of a Musical.
