SquishyTown Asylum Ready for Prime Time!

Troup photo (4)UPDATE: Due to the snow and closures throughout the state, the SquishyTown Asylum performance is postponed to Saturday, January 31, at 7:00 p.m.

A new improvisational theater troupe, called SquishyTown Asylum, will have its first performance at New Britain Youth Theater on Saturday, January 24, at 7:00 p.m.

The improv group, which performs short comic scenes without a script (often based on audience suggestions), is made up of nine performers who have previously taken an improv class with the youth theater company. Despite their young ages—ranging from 12 to 17—each of the members have been performing on stage for years. The group describes their improv performances as “crazy,” “pandemonium,” and “both silly and slightly terrifying.” Performances are appropriate for all ages. And the name SquishyTown Asylum? “One of us used it a scene one day,” they say, “and it stuck like gum.”

Improv troupe members include Eric Canfield, Dylan Cushing, Clare Farrington, Aiden Fedele, Jasmine Fedele, Hannah Lavergne, Rayne Lynch, Emily Michaud, and Samantha Michaud. They come to NBYT from New Britain, Berlin, Bristol, Middletown, Southington, Thomaston, and Torrington. NBYT Teaching Artists Carmine Lavieri and Krysten Drachenberg, both experienced improv performers themselves, advise the group.

SquishyTown Asylum will perform at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA, located at 50 High Street, in downtown New Britain on Saturday, January 24, at 7:00 p.m. A donation of $5 is suggested for admission, and tickets will be available at the door only.
