Spring Classes Beginning Soon!

March 6, 2017

Stage PerformanceSpring classes begin on Saturday, March 25, at NBYT’s new studio theater space at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA Program Center located at 362 Main Street in the Kensington section of Berlin.

Stage Performance Skills,
Section I: Ages 6 – 10

Saturdays, 9:30 – 10:30 am
Stage Performance Skills,
Section II: Ages 8 – 12

Saturdays, 10:40 – 11:40 am
8 weeks, $100

NBYT’s Stage Performance classes focus on building the skills that make actors better stage performers—and even better presenters and speakers. They’re ideal for younger actors, children who want their first experience onstage—or a little more experience—or even older students who want to enhance their skills or who aren’t able to audition and rehearse for NBYT’s productions.

In eight-week terms, drama games and scenes from world folk tales, fairy tales, and fables are used to teach character development, storytelling, voice, movement, and how to perform in front of an audience. Older and experienced students work on scenes with a greater focus on character development and script analysis; the emphasis this spring for the older class will be on building ensemble skills. Both classes end with a “share day” performance” for family and friends.

Improv, Sections I & II: Ages 10-18
Saturdays, 11:50 am – 12:50 pm
8 weeks, $100

Participants get a basic understanding of improvisational theater concepts such as story building, environmental awareness, saying “yes,” and making and accepting dramatic offers. The group is introduced to short-form improv games designed to build teamwork and reinforce basic concepts. No prior experience in theater or improv is necessary, and participants will be able to take what they learn and use it to not only become better actors, but also better listeners and speakers.

Returning students are challenged to expand their skills and stretch their choices. Students age 12 and older who have taken at least one year of improv may register for the advanced section. A short performance is held at the end of the final class.
