Auditions Announced for CINDERELLA

CinderellaNBYT will hold auditions for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Getting to Know Cinderella on Sunday, January 15, and Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center Annex at 19 Chestnut Street in New Britain. Sunday hours are 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday hours are 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The production will be rehearsed at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, and will be performed there on May 4, 5 and 6, 2012. Jefferson is near the Farmington border in New Britain, just off I-84.

No prior experience is required, and auditions are open to children from any town. Both boys and girls between ages 7 and 14 are encouraged to audition. All levels of experience are needed. No prepared monologue is required, but those auditioning should prepare at least four to six lines of a song, preferably from musical theater, to be sung a cappella (without accompaniment). This production of Cinderella is the world’s most magical fairy tale set to the music and lyrics of Broadway legends Rodgers and Hammerstein. It features songs such as In My Own Little Corner, Impossible/It’s Possible!, Stepsisters’ Lament, and Ten Minutes Ago. This “Getting to Know” title from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Library is adapted specifically for young performers. The production will be directed by NBYT Executive Artistic Director David Sousa, with musical direction by Anne Collin and choreography by Adrienne Marie.

Auditions for an original children’s play, I’m Getting Nothin’ for Christmas, will be held on Sunday, September 11, and Monday, September 12, 2011, at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center Annex at 19 Chestnut Street in New Britain.  Sunday hours are 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Monday hours are 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The production will be presented on December 9, 10 and 11, 2011.

I’m Getting Nothin’ for Christmas tells the story of three children who get themselves on Santa’s naughty list, and it takes sneaking to the North Pole and the help of every good elf there to set things right and uncover a mischievous plot. The play, which includes familiar Christmas songs, was written by Connecticut playwright Denise Clapsaddle, author of last season’s A Children’s Christmas Carol. The New Britain Youth Theater production, directed by Artistic Director David Sousa, will be the play’s premiere.

First NBYT Teen Company Auditions Announced

I Know I Saw GypsiesThe NBYT Teen Company will hold its first auditions for the play, I Know I Saw Gypsies, on Sunday, June 5, and Tuesday, June 7, at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center at 19 Chestnut Street in New Britain.  Auditions on both days will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The production will be presented on July 29 and 30 in the Trinity-on-Main Recital Hall.

No prior experience is required, and auditions are open to teens ages 13 through 18 from any town. Everyone auditioning should prepare a monologue of twenty to thirty lines from the play; click here for an excerpt from the play. NBYT Teen CompanyI Know I Saw Gypsies consists of several short pieces written by high school playwrights and adapted by Tom Erhard. The play deals with teen issues such as lack of popularity, prejudice, bullying, first love, family relationships, and other school troubles. Several of the pieces are comical; many are touching and serious; and all of them are powerful. The production will be simply staged by NBYT Executive Artistic Director David Sousa, and will give young actors the opportunity to explore voice, emotions, monologues, and other acting techniques.

BABE, THE SHEEP-PIG auditions!

Auditions for Babe, the Sheep-Pig, are coming on Sunday, January 30, and Monday, January 31, 2011, at Trinity-on-Main Performance Center Annex at 19 Chestnut Street in New Britain.  Sunday hours are 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Monday hours are also 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The production will be presented on April 29 through May 1, 2011.

No prior experience is required, and auditions are open to children from any town. Both males and females between ages 7 and 18 are encouraged to audition.  All levels of experience are needed for both young farm animals and challenging teen roles. No prepared monologue is required, but those auditioning will be asked to repeat lines or read from the play. Comfortable clothing and footwear should be worn. The play is based on the book The Sheep-Pig by Dick King-Smith, which also inspired the 1996 film Babe. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. This tale of one piglet’s rise to become a world famous sheep-herder keeps the whole farm—and the audience—holding its breath to see whether Babe will triumph, against all odds, to become the hero of the hour. The stage adaptation was written by award-winning children’s dramatist David Wood. The NBYT production will be directed by David Sousa.

Auditions Scheduled for A CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS CAROL

Get ready, kids! NBYT is holding its first auditions! The production is the holiday classic, A Children’s Christmas Carol, and auditions are on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at Trinity-on-Main Performance Space at 69 Main Street in New Britain.  Ages 8 to 12 will be scheduled between 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.; ages 13 to 18 will be scheduled between 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Make-up auditions (for those unable to attend on Sunday) will be scheduled on Monday, September 13, with callbacks on Tuesday, September 14. The production will be presented on December 4 and 5, 2010.

Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, A Children’s Christmas Carol is the classic holiday story of Ebenezer Scrooge and one night’s life-changing visits to Christmases past, present and future. All roles will be performed by young actors ages 8 to 18. The stage adaptation has been written by Denise Clapsaddle; the production will be directed by David Sousa.
